Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 Review
The Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is one of the most advanced quadcopter packages out there, yet it is easy to fly and quite foolproof for the average consumer. Its standout features are that it can be flown by a mobile device (iPhone, iPad, Android phone) and it also can stream and record HD video! The AR.Drone 2.0 streams high definition video (720p HD) signal to your mobile device through a front-facing sensor, giving you that First Person View (FPV) of where the aircraft is going. This not only offers a unique perspective, but it allows you to more easily navigate obstacles that would otherwise be tough to go around using a traditional remote controller.
It comes with a protective hull (shown above) to shield the blades while flying indoors, which is great for first flyers who may end up crashing it a few times before really getting the hang of it! When flying outdoors, it is easy to remove the hull and thus have less weight and higher maneuverability. The software for this drone / quadcopter is also quite advanced – Parrot is primarily a wireless software company and therefore they put a lot of time and effort into making everything work well and seamlessly. The AR.Drone 2.0 can hover on its own, land autonomously, and now – with the integration of a soon to be released Director Mode, you can pre-program where you want the drone to fly and it will perform the entire flight route on its own! Parrot also plans to release a Flight Recorder to enable you to record additional videos on local storage (USB) on the drone itself, as well as track your exact location and elevation via GPS – enabling you to view your 3-D flight path later on.

We here at QuadcopterHQ think that the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 is a great quadcopter for beginners who aren’t worried about shelling out a few bucks to get started. While it won’t get you professional grade video, it is a very simple platform that seamlessly gets you flying and taking pictures and video from the moment you open the box. Parrot has been around for a while and offers great support to its customers, and they have really put together a great product with the AR.Drone 2.0.
Parrot has released a couple updates to the AR.Drone 2.0 since it was launched – the AR.Drone 2.0 Power Edition and the AR.Drone 2.0 Elite Edition. Both of these updates were incremental improvements, and we’re hoping for a major update – an AR.Drone 3.0 – hopefully sometime soon!
